Winners of the 2010 Beachboy Paddle Race

We premiere our first edition of El Coquí of Rincón On Line with our favorite story from 2010 – the review of the Rincón Beachboy Stand-Up Paddle Race.  This annual event will take place on April 2, 2011 at Villa Cofresí. There is still time for you to enter the race, book hotel reservations to be in Rincón or just to set aside that Sunday for the best time of your life.  Read the entire story below and, as is our policy, you can read the story in English or in Spanish.  We’ll see you in Rincón in April.

Inauguramos nuestra primera edición de El Coquí of Rincón On Line con nuestra historia favorita del año 2010-la reseña del Rincón Beachboy Stand-Up Paddle Race.  Este evento anual tendrá lugar el 2 de abril de 2011 en Villa Cofresí.  Aun queda tiempo para inscribirse en la competencia, hacer sus reservaciones de hotel para estar en Rincón, o simplemente para separar ese domingo para disfrutar del mejor momento de su vida.  Lea la historia completa a continuación.  Y, acorde a nuestra política, la podrá leer en inglés o en español.  Nos vemos en abril en Rincón.

Do you remember the movie Field of Dreams? The theme was “if you build it, they will come”. The 2nd Annual Rincón Beach Boy Paddleboard Contest, held on Sunday, April 11th, 2010 was a Field of Dreams moment.   In 2009 there were 70 contestants.  In 2010 there were 160 contestants, with many of the contestants coming from around the island. There were participants also from St. Thomas, New York, New Jersey, Ft. Lauderdale and Maine They had built it and everyone came.   It looks like there will be no stopping this wonderful event hosted by the Villa Cofresi at the beautiful Rincón beach.

From the 7 a.m. registration to the awards ceremony at the end, this was a special day in Rincon. I predict, as do the organizers of the event, that the 3rd Annual Rincón Beach Boy Paddleboard Contest will double in size from this year.   And they will be ready for it.   This is an organized and talented group of people who know how to have fun and who are sharing their dream with Rincón and Puerto Rico.

The contest was the dream of ten people who formed a committee and saw that it happened. Sandra Caro and her husband Hector Mendez ( “Tito”) of the Villa Cofresi, Bobby Dozier and his wife Raquel Gonzalez of Mar Azul Surf and Paddleboard Rentals, Christina Ferrer of Graficos Shakti, PR and Greg Carson of Taino Divers, Thomas Kosmoll, Arleen Ruiz and their San Juan link, Luis and Esther Valladares, were the original members.   Mori Sánchez and Javier Quiñones from Tamboo and Hector Ruíz from Villa Antonio have since joined the organizing committee.

This year’s event was beautifully organized from the valet service at the large parking lot on Carr. 115 down to the bottles of cold water available to all.   There were a few tables of items for sale such as the indispensable Rincón Beach Boy tee shirt (which were quickly redesigned into something stylish with beads by some of the young people attending), beach towels, sun lotion, a great drink treat guaranteed to be healthy and make you lose weight even if it is made with Nestles ice cream.   The Cofresi was serving breakfast to its guests and it was available to others.   There was a special, reasonably priced buffet lunch for everyone and of course, the famous Cofresi bar was open and you couldn’t help noticing that people were sipping Piratas (their delicious coconut drink) as it rolled toward the noon hour.   After lunch a Reggae Band (Jommo Pemberton) played.   People kept arriving and greeting and meeting friends. There was a general party atmosphere. Did I mention that the early morning weather was superb?

The Contest started at 9 a.m. with the Elite Unlimited and Elite Stock Classes ( Green tee shirts) taking off first to complete a 6 ½ mile paddle to the Lighthouse and back.  There were police boats, the Flying Fish Parasail Boat, Coconut Watersports and Rincon Sailing’s sail boats to monitor the paddle and help anyone who needed it.   The Open Class ( White tee shirts) were next. (This Open Class was 2.5 mile paddle around a designated course to the Marina and back. There was also a 400 meter course for children( “Kids Open”).

Se acuerda de la película ‘Campo de Sueños’ (Field of Dreams).   El tema era ‘Si lo edificas, ellos vendrán’. El 2do concurso anual de ‘Rincón Beach Boy Paddleboard’, celebrado el Domingo, 11 de Abril, 2010 fue un momento de Campo de Sueños. En el 2009 hubo 70 concursantes.  En el 2010 hubo 160 concursantes, con mucho de los concursantes siendo de alrededor de la isla. También hubo concursantes de San Tomas, Nueva York, Nueva Jersey, Ft. Lauderdale y Maine.  Ellos lo construyeron y todos vinieron. Parecía que nada podría parar este hermoso evento en la bella playa de Rincón donde sirvió de anfitrión Villa Cofresí.

El concurso fue el sueño de diez personas que formaron el comité y se aseguraron que ocurriera.  Los miembros originales fueron Sandra Caro y su esposo Héctor Méndez (‘Tito’) de la Villa Cofresí, Bobby Dozier y su esposa Raquel González de ‘Mar Azul Surf and Paddleboard Rental’ , Christina Ferrer de Graficos Shakti, PR y Greg Carson de Taino Divers, Thomas Kosmoll, Arleen Ruiz y su ‘San Juan Link’, Luis y Esther Valladares . Mori Sánchez, Javier Quiñones de Tamboo y Hector Ruiz de Villa Antonio desde entonces se unieron al comité organizador.

El evento de este año fue admirablemente organizado desde el servicio aparcamiento en un el amplio estacionamiento en la 115 hasta las botellas de agua disponibles para todos. Hubo algunas mesas con artículos para la venta, como las indispensables camisetas de Rincón Beach Boy Paddleboard (las cuales fueron rápidamente rediseñadas con estilo de collares de cuentas por algunos jóvenes que visitaban), toallas, bloqueador solar, y una deliciosa bebida garantizada para hacerte saludable y perder peso, aunque fue hecha a base de mantecado Nestle. El Cofresí sirvió desayuno a sus huéspedes y también estaba disponible para otros. Hubo un especial de almuerzo estilo bufet con precios razonables para todos y por supuesto, la famosa barra de Cofresí estaba abierta y no se podía pasar por desapercibido que habían personas tomando Piratas (la famosa bebida en coco) al aproximarse el mediodía. Luego del almuerzo una banda de Reggae (Jommo Pemberton) tocaba. La gente continuó llegando y saludando a sus amistades. La atmosfera era de festejo. Mencione que el clima mañanero estuvo esplendido?

El concurso comenzó a las a las 9 a.m. con las categorías ‘Elite Unlimited y Elite Stock (con camisetas verdes) saliendo primero para completar 6.5 millas de remo hasta el Faro y regresar. Habia botes de policía, el bote de Flying Fish Parasail, Coconut Watersports y los veleros de Rincón Sailing, para monitorear a los remadores y ayudar a cualquier persona necesitada. La categoría clase abierta fue la próxima (con camisetas blanca)esta clase remó por 2.5 millas alrededor de una área designada hasta la marina y regreso. También hubo remo para niños en un recorrido de 400 metros (“Kids Open”).

Desde el comienzo de la inscripción a las 7a.m. hasta la ceremonia de entrega de galardones, este fue un día especial en Rincón. Yo pronostico al igual que los organizadores del evento, que la 3ra Competencia Anual de Rincón Paddleboard duplicara el tamaños de este año. Y ellos estarán listos para eso. Este es un grupo de personas organizadas y talentosas que saben cómo divertirse y quienes comparten sus sueños con Rincón y Puerto Rico.
